Johnny Depp is reportedly in talks to star in “Transcendence,” a sci-fi film about an evil computer and helmed by Oscar-winning director Wally Pfister, who worked on Christopher Nolan’s films, including his Batman trilogy.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Depp, is set to earn a whopping $20 million in advance, against 15 percent of the movie’s gross profit at the box office. Such deals are rare and are given to the most elite actors, actresses and directors. Depp, studio Alcon Entertainment and distributor Warner Bros. Studios have not commented.

“Transcendence” has been compared to Nolan’s 2010 movie “Inception” as well as the iconic sci-fi movie “2001: A Space Odyssey.” The new film is about a man who creates a computer that possesses a “malevolent awareness.” Depp’s character then gets sucked into the evil machine, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

“I’m thrilled and feel very fortunate to have the opportunity to work with Johnny,” Pfister told the outlet. “He is a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.”

The movie marks Pfister’s directorial debut. He previously worked as a cinematographer on “Inception,” which earned him his first Oscar and fourth Academy Award nomination, as well as Nolan’s 2000 movie “Memento” and recent Batman trilogy – “Batman Begins,” “The Dark Knight” and “The Dark Knight Rises.” In addition, he has also worked on films such as “The Prestige,” “Moneyball” and “The Italian Job.”

Production on “Transcendence” is slated to begin in early 2013. Pfister told the Sarasota Herald-Tribuneearlier this month that the movie is “a present-day science fiction film, a fairly big concept,” adding: “It’s bigger budget – not as big as “Batman,” but not independent.”

The script for “Transcendence” is being penned by Jack Paglen and the movie also marks his screenwriting debut.

Depp, a 49-year-old three-time Oscar nominee, is best known for Disney’s “Pirates of the Caribbean” films and Tim Burton flicks such as “Edward Scissorhands,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Sweeney Todd” but he has in the past starred in a sci-fi movie – “The Astronaut’s Wife” in 1999. (Check out photos of Johnny Depp in his many roles over the years)

According to Forbes, Depp earned $30 million between May 2011 and May 2012, during which he reprised his part as Captain Jack Sparrow in the fourth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie – “On Stranger Tides.” He took a pay cut for his role as Tonto in Disney’s new film ”The Lone Ranger,” which ran into budget problems. It is slated for release on July 3, 2013. See photos from “The Lone Ranger”).

Depp is also expected to reprise his role in the fifth “Pirates of the Caribbean” movie.

BREAKING: Johnny Depp is negotiating to star in Transcendence, the directorial debut of Oscar-winning cinematographer Wally Pfister. The project is being put together for an early 2013 shoot by Alcon Entertainment co-founders and co-CEOs Broderick Johnson and Andrew Kosove. Alcon will release through its output deal with Warner Bros.
The screenplay, written by newcomer Jack Paglen, was developed by Annie Marter and Straight Up Films, whose company principals include Marisa Polvino, Kate Cohen and Regency Boies. Polvino, Marter and Cohen will produce along with David Valdes (The Book Of Eli), Johnson and Kosove. Boies will co-produce. The plot of Transcendence is being kept under wraps.
Christopher Nolan and Emma Thomas are serving as executive producers and Alcon is financing. Pfister won an Oscar for his cinematography on the Nolan-directed Inception. He has done seven films with Nolan and Thomas, including The Dark Knight Rises and Memento. He was also cinematographer on Moneyball and The Italian Job.
Depp is repped by UTA.
Said Kosove and Johnson: “Johnny Depp is one of the most charismatic, talented actors imaginable and we are delighted he is with us on this project.”
Pfister called Depp “a creative and intelligent artist whom I feel will bring great depth to the character and the overall narrative.”

The Thin Man: Warner Bros sospende il remake con Johnny Depp/ ‘The Thin Man’ Remake On Ice For a Bit

La Warner Bros vuole mettere le mani su “The Thin Man”? | Warner Bros Pumping The Brakes On ‘The Thin Man’ Remake?

E Marshall dovrà probabilmente dirigere Into The Woods, come prossimo film Disney.

Warner Bros Pumping The Brakes On ‘The Thin Man’ Remake?

EXCLUSIVE: I’m hearing that Warner Bros is pumping the brakes on The Thin Man, the remake that Johnny Depp plans to star in for director Rob Marshall. The film hadn’t been green lit yet, and they hadn’t got to the point where they set an actress to play Nora to Depp’s Nick. But I’ve heard that Marshall will likely move on and direct Into The Woods as his next film at Disney. Marshall has also been working on that film for some time. A budget for The Thin Man was just submitted, and I’m told there isn’t a big rush here because Depp wants to take some time between films. But Warner Bros can’t have been too happy with the performance of Dark Shadows, another quirky remake of a period piece with Depp. The studio hasn’t been shy about pulling back on films like Arthur & Lancelot and Akira over budget and redeveloping them for cost. Word is that this budget came in north of $100 million, and that it was a factor. The original plan was to start production in late November, but that will change as Marshall eyes Into the Woods next and The Thin Man after. WB tells me the film wasn’t green lit and the studio denies there is any drama going on.

Johnny & Tim: un’altro progetto insieme? / Will Depp and Burton rise again with ‘Dr. Phibes’?

Phibes. In the Beginning”. Vedremo…

The JohnnyDepp-Tim Burton big-screen retooling of TV’s “Dark Shadows” hasn’t been released yet, though the trailer looks fabulous. This new version appears to be intentionally funny, as opposed to the unintended yucks sometimes generated by the series, which taped live.

But another Burton-Depp collaboration is already said to be in the works. These two have paired seven times over the years. They are the Laurel and Hardy of surreal horror/fantasy.

Rumor has it that the boys will recreate the famous Vincent Price villain, Dr. Phibes. All horror fans recall 1971’s “The Abominable Dr. Phibes,” with Price as a mad doctor set on avenging the death of his wife. It was one of the late actor’s most beloved characterizations. (He reprised the role a year later in “Dr. Phibes Rises Again.”)

Now screenwriter and author William Goldstein has worked up a new Phibes novel, “Dr. Phibes: In the Beginning.” Goldstein is no stranger to the character, having penned similar novels when the two “Phibes” films were released.

The book is in the hands of Warner Bros. and producer Jon Jashni.
