Johnny sarà nel nuovo album degli Aerosmith, ”Music From Another Dimension”, in veste di ‘corista’ nel pezzo ”Freedom Figther”. Joe Perry ha spiegato durante un’intervista, come sia successo:
ITA: Qual’è la storia dietro “Freedom Fighter” e la tua collaborazione con Depp?
Una volta Steven ed io eravamo fuori a Los Angeles, stavamo lavorando ad American Idol, che era due giorni alla settimana. Il resto del tempo lo abbiamo passato in studio. E’ stato stimolante lavorare fuori casa a Los Angeles e stare a contatto con numerosi musicisti. Johnny Depp è uno di loro. Lo devo “categorizzare” come un musicista di prima classe. Credo che il suo essere attore abbia un pò messo in secondo piano la musica, ma lui è un musicista prima di tutto. Sono uscito con Waddy Wachtel, Slash e tutti quei ragazzacci che vivevano la. Solitamente non riesco a parlare con quelli che vivono a Boston. E’ stato un periodo di grande ispirazione. Mi sentivo come se ci fosse una vibrazione o dell’energia mancante dal disco, e ho scritto “Freedom Fighter”. C’era qualcosa nelle notizie di quel momento che hanno ispirato il testo della canzone. Si parla di persone che sono combattenti per la libertà, ma non necessariamente fanno uso di bombe e armi da fuoco. Loro sono report. Loro muovono il loro culo in prima linea, raccontando la verità. Il cameramen riporta la verità alle persone. Questa canzone è un tributo a questi portatori di libertà. Johnny era lì il giorno che ho fatto le tracce, e quando è venuto il momento dei cori, lui ha cominciato a cantarla.
ENG: What’s the story behind “Freedom Fighter” and your collaboration with Johnny Depp?
Once Steven and I were out in L.A., he was working on American Idol, which was basically two days a week. The rest of the time we were in the studio. It was so inspiring living out there in L.A. and rubbing elbows with so many musicians. Johnny Depp was one of them. I have to rate him as a first-class musician. As great as an actor as he is, he’s also right there as a musician. I guess the acting thing outweighed the music thing way back when, but he’s a musician through and through. I’d be hanging out with Waddy Wachtel, Slash, and all of these guys that live out there. Usually, I never get to talk to them living in Boston. It was a very inspiring time. I felt like there was a vibe or energy missing from the record, and I wrote “Freedom Fighter”. There was something going on in the news at the time that inspired the lyrics. It talks about people who are freedom fighters, but they’re not necessarily using bombs and guns. They report. They get out there, put their asses on the line, and speak the truth. The cameramen get the truth and bring it to people. The song is a tribute to those freedom fighters. I wanted to get that down. Johnny was there the day I was laying the tracks. When it came time to do the background vocals, and he sang them.

Che Johnny Depp ami la musica forse più del cinema lo ha sempre dichiarato’: ”La musica è stato il mio primo amore”. E si sa, il primo amore non si scorda mai!
“Crescendo in Kentucky, sono stato allevato ascoltando il blues e la musica country “, ha raccontato in una recente intervista al NY Times.
Ha ascoltato Woody Guthrie tutta la sua vita, anche se “è grazie a Bob Dylan che la sua musica si è solidificata nel mio lessico.” 
La musica ha anche aiutato Depp nella sua carriera di attore: ha basato il suo personaggio Jack Sparrow dei “Pirati dei Caraibi”, a Keith Richards.
“E’ il ragazzo più forte ragazzo che abbia mai incontrato“, ha detto Depp di Richards, chiamando il suo libro di memorie “Life”, una ”lettura brillante”. Appassionato di libri scritti da musicisti (tra i suoi preferiti quello di Steven Tyler, “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?,” e quello di Dylan, “Chronicles” ), Depp sta attualmente portando il suo amore per la musica sullo schermo, lavorando a un film (”Happy”) in onore di Richards.

“Growing up in Kentucky, I was raised on bluegrass and country music,” Depp said in an e-mail interview. He’s listened to Guthrie all his life, although “it is thanks to Bob Dylan that the man and his music became solidified in my lexicon.” Music has also figured in Depp’s acting career: he based his character Jack Sparrow, in the mega-franchise “Pirates of the Caribbean,” on Keith Richards.
“He’s the coolest guy I’ve ever met,” Depp said of Richards, calling his recent memoir, “Life,” a “brilliant read.” A fan of books by musicians (among his favorites: Steven Tyler’s “Does the Noise in My Head Bother You?,” Dylan’s “Chronicles”), Depp is currently bringing his love of music to the screen, working on a film in Richards’s honor.
If he could portray a musician himself? “Junior Kimbrough,” Depp said. “However, failing that, I wouldn’t mind slipping into the skin and bones of Harry Partch. One of our greatest, pioneering artists, who is rarely given the respect, let alone the appreciation, that he so richly deserves.” As for Woody Guthrie, he “represents the soul and the sound of the America that I love.”
