I lunghi mesi di campagna per scongiurare le polemiche dai nativi americani sul film Disney, hanno compreso anche una benedizione da parte di un anziano Navajo.

Quando la  Disney ha rilasciato il cartone animato Pocahontas  nel 1995, la canzone “Selvaggi” è stata criticata come mezzo per  promuovere stereotipi negativi circa i nativi americani. Nel tentativo di rompere con quel passato culturalmente insensibile, Disney ha avviato un vasto programma di sensibilizzazione in anticipo all’uscita di The Lone Ranger, prevista per il 3 Luglio.

Nel film  Johnny Depp interpreta Tonto – un personaggio che durante la serie TV degli anni ’50, parlava in un inglese stentato e mancava di personalità. Ma il ‘nuovo’ Tonto  gode di una ricca storia passata, tra cui un ritratto autentico della sua eredità Comanche. Disney e Depp hanno tranquillamente corteggiato a lungo l’approvazione dei nativi d’ Americana, prima che le telecamere si accendesero sul film da 250.000.000$ di Gore Verbinski. I leader degli indiani d’america  sono stati presenti sia durante la fase di scrittura che per tutta la produzione del film.

Durante le riprese, Depp, è stato solennemente adottato nella Nazione Comanche per mezzo di una cerimonia privata alla presenza dell’allora presidente tribale Johnny Wauqua (Photo here). Anche gli anziani Navajo hanno dato la loro benedizione,  prima di girare nella Monument Valley al confine di stato tra Arizona-Utan, e LaDonna Harris, un’ attivista sociale nota per la sua leadership della Americans for Indian Opportunity, è stato invitata sul set.

Dopo aver terminato le riprese, anche Depp è volato a Lawton, Oklahoma, per partecipare alla Fiera Nazione Comanche (Photo here). Tornando al western, Hollywood spesso ha ritratto i nativi americani come incivile e violenti. Ma un insider Disney dice che i commenti dei gruppi di nativi americani su The Lone Ranger è stata assolutamente positiva.

Per Chris Eyre, il più conosciuto dei nativi americani poichè lavora nel mondo dello spettacolo  come produttore e regista, la mossa della Disney è un cambiamento positivo.  “Rispetto Johnny Depp per come ha realizzato  questo film accade e per come ha cercato di riscrivere Tonto per una nuova generazione.”

Johnny Depp è stato molto entusiasta di diventare un membro onorario della tribù Comanche mentre girava  ”The Lone Ranger”, in New Mexico lo scorso anno, insistendo che “l’adozione” era “forse il più grande ricordo.”La star del cinema, che interpreta il nativo americano Tonto protagonista nel nuovo film, è stato davvero entusiasta quando gli anziani della tribù lo hanno invitato a diventare un membro della loro famiglia allargata e ha colto al volo l’opportunità di essere parte di una cerimonia sacra a casa dell’ attivista LaDonna Harris ad Albuquerque.
Egli dice: “Quando è arrivata la richiesta , non riuscivo a crederci. E ‘stato un onore oltre tutti gli onori. … Il nome che hanno scelto per me, Mah-Woo-Meh, significa mutaforma, che suppongo sia abbastanza adatto, e sono molto orgoglioso di questa scelta. “Depp racconta alla rivista Entertainment Weekly che questo grande onore lo ha aiutato a capire che lui ha scelto saggiamente quando si trattava di creare Tonto per il film.L’attore spiega: “Anche con quel poco di conoscenza che ho del grado di sangue indigeno dentro di me, i nostri fratelli nativi americani e sorelle mi hanno dato la passione e la grinta per costruire il mio personaggio con grande cura.”

Disney’s quiet, months-long campaign to head off Native American controversy also included a location blessing from a Navajo elder.

When Disney released the animated musical Pocahontas in 1995, the song “Savages” was criticized as fostering negative stereotypes about Native Americans. In an effort to break from that culturally insensitive past, Disney has embarked on a broad outreach program in advance of its July 3 tentpole The Lone Ranger.   The film stars Johnny Depp as Tonto — a character who during his 1950s TV run spoke in broken English and lacked dimension. But the new Tonto enjoys a rich backstory, including an authentic portrayal of his Comanche heritage. Disney and Depp quietly courted Native American approval long before cameras rolled on the $250 million Gore Verbinski film. American Indian leaders were brought on during the script stage and were present throughout production.   During filming, Depp, who has identified himself as being of Native American ancestry, was ceremonially adopted into the Comanche Nation by way of a private ceremony in the presence of then-tribal chairman Johnny Wauqua. Local Navajo elders performed a Navajo Blessing before shooting in Monument Valley on the Arizona-Utah state line, and LaDonna Harris, a social activist known for her leadership of the Americans for Indian Opportunity, was invited on set.   After production wrapped, Depp even flew to Lawton, Okla., to participate in the Comanche Nation Fair. Going back to Westerns, Hollywood often has portrayed Native Americans as uncivilized and violent. But a Disney insider says Lone Ranger feedback from Native American groups has been overwhelmingly positive.   For Chris Eyre, the highest-profile Native American director working in show business, Disney’s move is a welcome change. “I’m not looking to this movie to be the Native Schindler’s List,” says Eyre. “But I completely respect Johnny Depp for making this movie happen and for him to try and rewrite Tonto for a new generation.”

Johnny Depp was thrilled to become an honorary member of the Commanche tribe while he filmed “The Lone Ranger” in New Mexico last year, insisting the “adoption” was “possibly the greatest memento.”
The movie star, who plays Native American hero Tonto in the new film, was thrilled when tribe elders invited him to become a member of their extended family and he jumped at the chance to be a part of a sacred ceremony at the home of activist LaDonna Harris in Albuquerque.
He says, “When the request came in, I couldn’t believe it. It was an honor beyond all honors. … The name they chose for me, Mah-Woo-Meh, means shapeshifter, which I suppose is quite apt, and I take great pride in that choice.”
Depp tells Entertainment Weekly magazine that the honor helped convince him that he’s chosen wisely when it came to creating Tonto for the film.
The actor explains, “Even with what little knowledge I have of the degree of indigenous blood within me, our Native American brothers and sisters gave me the passion and drive to build my character with great care.”
“The Lone Ranger” hits cinema screens this summer.
