For No Good Reason: Charlie Paul porta paura e delirio a Bologna
“Ho imparato a disegnare perché volevo provare a cambiare il mondo“. Con queste semplici parole l’artista Ralph Steadman ha riassunto il senso di un tocco personale considerato, ancor oggi, tra i più innovativi e rivoluzionari del panorama britannico ed non solo. Così, attraverso il documentario For No Good Reason, già presentato al London Film Festival, il regista inglese Charlie Paul ricostruisce un percorso lungo più di trent’anni per riportare sullo schermo lo spirito anarchico e completamente libero che ha caratterizzato gli anni più intensi vissuti da Steadman come artista e come uomo. Conosciuto soprattutto per le caricature a sfondo politico apparse su magazine come Rolling Stone, The New York Times e Daily Telegraph, il vignettista inglese ha condiviso gran parte della sua carriera con il giornalista americano Hunter S. Thompson. In modo particolare la loro collaborazione ha portato alla realizzazione e al successo del romanzo Paura e disgusto a Las Vegas, da cui nel 1998 il regista Terry Gilliam ha realizzato il film Paura e Delirio a Las Vegas con Johnny Depp e Benicio Del Toro.
Ecco l’intervista fatta al regista al Biografilm Festival di Bologna:
For No Good Reason ricostruisce con particolare attenzione il processo creativo di un artista. Quanto tempo ha richiesto un progetto così meticoloso?
Charlie Paul: La realizzazione del documentario ha richiesto un lungo lavoro durato ben quindici anni. Durante questo periodo ho progettato l’intera struttura con Steadman, introducendomi ogni singolo giorno nel suo studio e posizionando una telecamera sopra il tavolo da lavoro. In questo modo volevo catturare il processo creativo in ogni singola fase, dalla macchia di colore che sembra gettare casualmente sul foglio fino alla scoperta delle forme e dei significati che nasconde. Insomma, è stata un’esperienza incredibile.
A fare simbolicamente da guida nel mondo di Steadman è l’attore Johnny Depp. Come è stato coinvolto nel progetto?
Charlie Paul: In modo del tutto naturale. In primo luogo perché è un grande fan del lavoro di Steadman, conosciuto personalmente grazie a Terry Gilliam. Inoltre non dimentichiamo anche il legame con il film Paura e Delirio a Las Vegas, tratto dal romanzo di Thompson che Steadman ha illustrato. Non possiamo negare, inoltre, che avere il volto di Johnny, così riconoscibile dal pubblico, aiuta a dirigere l’attenzione anche sul tema centrale del documentario, ossia il lavoro e lo spirito creativo di un’artista.
Nel documentario viene dedicato largo spazio al rapporto personale e lavorativo di Thompson/Steadman. Che tipo di relazione esisteva tra i due?
Charlie Paul: Erano dei rivali, senza ombra di dubbio. In modo particolare Hunter guardava Ralph con una sorta di sospetto. Nel profondo era consapevole che gran parte del successo ottenuto dal suo romanzo si doveva ai disegni innovativi e rivoluzionari del compagno di lavoro. Allo stesso tempo, però, nonostante le loro differenze caratteriali, i due erano molto legati. Dei fratelli che, nonostante la natura tranquilla e non competitiva di Ralph, si sono sfidati tutta la vita. Quando Hunter ha deciso di togliersi la vita, per Ralph è stato un grande colpo. Ad esempio, abbiamo una lunga sezione in cui parla di questo con grande tristezza. Da parte mia, però, sono stato molto attento a non indulgere troppo in queste atmosfere.
Seguire costantemente lo spunto creativo di un artista non è cosa facile. Come avete organizzato le riprese?
Charlie Paul: Effettivamente non è stato semplice. Abbiamo avuto dei momenti interessanti ed altri che abbiamo dovuto buttare completamente. In questo senso il film si è mosso più o meno con lo stesso andamento tenuto dal lavoro di Steadman. Funziona tutto più o meno così; ogni giorno lui va nel suo studio e si mette davanti ad un foglio. A quel punto getta una chiazza di colore aspettando che qualche cosa si manifesti, oppure no. La vera avventura è che non sai mai dove andrà a finire questo processo. E questa è stata una delle caratteristiche che ho amato di più. La mia intenzione era proprio di mostrare al pubblico quanto Imprevedibile fosse la vita di un artista.
Nel suo documentario un elemento importante è la musica che accompagna la produzione di Steadman nel corso degli anni. Come avete lavorato su questo elemento?
Charlie Paul: La tentazione era di usare la musica originale di ogni decennio raccontato. Alla fine, però, ho deciso di reinventare il tutto mettendo, ad esempio, della tecno nella parte dedicata a Leonardo. Nella sua continua ricerca espressiva Steadman cerca di mediare qualsiasi forma d’arte ed io ho cercato di fare la stessa cosa con il materiale musicale. Spero che anche in questo modo il film esprima la sua follia creativa.
Nella realizzazione del documentario si è sentito sempre libero di esprimere la sua visione?
Charlie Paul: Assolutamente. Steadman non è minimamente interessato alla sua personalità, ne all’importanza che potrebbe avere un documentario su di lui. In realtà si è molto divertito durante tutto il processo creativo, disegnando per noi e raccontando parte delle sue avventure. L’elemento più incredibile di quest’uomo è ancora l’entusiasmo che ha nei confronti della sua arte e l’esigenza di esprimerla ogni singolo giorno, senza alcuna interruzione e con il cuore. Da questo si comprende come ció che fa sia profondamente parte di se.
Quale futuro avrà For No Good Reason?
Charlie Paul: In realtà non lo sappiamo ancora. In autunno il film verrà visto anche a Los Angeles e a quel punto staremo ad aspettare. Si sa che quando gli americani prendono in mano un progetto può succedere sempre di tutto.

Ulteriori lavori su questo film documentario hanno avuto luogo nel mese di aprile. “Abbiamo girato un po’ intorno alla casa di Johnny tre settimane fa circa” rivela Richards, aggiungendo che anche Tom Waits, Waddy Wachtel e Jim Keltner erano presenti per le riprese. “Facciamo un po ‘di musica e dopo chiacchieriamo un pochino. Sai, con Johnny è facile parlare.”
La lavorazione del progetto, provvisoriamente intitolato “Felice”, ha avuto inizio nel febbraio del 2010 e torna sull’amicizia ultradecenennale tra Johnny e Keith rafforzata dalle apparizioni di Keith in due dei film dei Pirati dei Caraibi. Depp ha già descritto il progetto come un incrocio tra Il Padrino e un dipinto di Caravaggio, aggiungendo che le riprese iniziali comprendevano dei camei di Patti Smith e Norah Jones .Mentre Richards conferma che il film “non è davvero” storico, calcola che “probabilmente ci sarà” del vecchio materiale, anche se “Johnny sta prendendo il controllo della sua fine visiva.”
La natura frammentaria delle riprese compiace Richards. “L’ho trovato interessante perchè si ha molto più spazio da gestire e mi piace molto passare del tempo con Johnny lavorandoci insieme. Ha una grande conoscenza della musica e di molte altre cose. Siamo simpatici. Comunque io sono suo padre, giusto?”
Quando gli è stato chiesto se l’attore avesse ripagato il suo debito, dopo aver in parte basato il proprio personaggio di Jack Sparrow sul ribelle degli Stones, Richards, dice: “c’è che credo che eravamo destinati a finire insieme.”

Latest work on Johnny Depp’s Keith doc proves the pair “were destined to end up together”
Further work on Johnny Depp’s film documentary about Keith Richards took place in April. “We shot a bit round Johnny’s house about three weeks ago,” Richards reveals, adding that Tom Waits, Waddy Wachtel and Jim Keltner were also present for filming. “We do a bit of music and then a bit of chat. Johnny’s easy to talk to, y’know.”
Work on the project, provisionally titled Happy began in February 2010 and comes on the back of a decade-plus friendship cemented by Richards’ appearances in two Pirates Of The Caribbean films. Depp has already described the project as a cross between The Godfather and a Caravaggio painting, adding that the initial shoot included cameos from Patti Smith and Norah Jones.
While Richards confirms that the film is “not really” historical, he reckons there “probably will be” some old footage, though “Johnny’s taking command of the visual end of it.”
The piecemeal nature of the filming suits Richards. “I find that interesting becasue you have much more room to manoeuvre. And I enjoy very much hanging with Johnny and working with him. He’s got a lot of knowledge about music and many other things. We’re simpatico. Anyway I’m his dad, right?”
Asked if the actor was repaying his debt, after part-basing his Jack Sparrow character on the rebel Stone, Richards, says “There is that, I guess we were destined to end up together.”

Johnny Depp ha aperto un proprio luogo intimo per poter avere un posto figo dove incontrarsi con gli amici e poter ascoltare la migliore musica in circolazione. C’erano buone opportunità che chi fosse un “amico del Viper Room” potesse essere anche più famoso delle bands che suonavano sul palco.
In quel periodo Olivia fu assunta come promotore del club e delle relazioni tra i vip e ora sta facendo un documentario musicale divertente e unico.
“Ho sempre amato l’idea dei nights degli anni ’20, ’30 e ’40″ dice Depp che spiega che voleva che il Viper Room fosse un posto dove la gente famosa non si sarebbe sentita come se fosse sullo schermo.
Nessuno sapeva mai cosa aspettarsi, ma il divertimento migliore che ci fosse, era sempre garantito. Era il miglior club per assistere alla musica live di prima categoria. Che si trattasse di una stupefacente band che suonava il blues, o un promettente gruppo rock o di uno spettacolo di danza divertente, l’atmosfera coi piedi per terra di Depp, faceva sentire tutti ben accolti.
Band sconosciute come quella di Kara’s Flowers (Maroon 5), The Wallflowers, The Pussycat Dolls, Counting Crows, The Black Eyed Peas e molte altre furono lanciate su quel piccolo palco del Viper.
Durante una serata davvero bella, alcuni degli “amici” salirono sul palco facendo esibizioni a sorpresa, come Mick Jagger, Flea dei Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Idol, o Iggy Pop. Non si poteva acquistare in anticipo un biglietto per questi show spettacolari. Bisognava solo avere la fortuna di trovarsi nel posto giusto e al momento giusto (che di solito era verso tarda notte – poco prima che il Viper chiudesse – quando gli ospiti a sorpresa salivano sul palco).
Il Viper Room aveva dei clienti vip abituali come Christina Applegate e Adam Duritz che lavoravano dietro il bar.
La reputazione del Viper Room fu oscurata da una terribile tragedia quando River Phoenix morì a poca distanza dalla porta di entrata. Una nube scura sostituì i bei tempi e la clientela locale venne rimpiazzata da turisti armati di macchine fotografiche.
Gran parte del documentario sarà dedicato alla riunione del primo concerto del Viper Room che fu tenuto sul palco. All’interno del filmato saranno garantite alcune incredibili esibizioni e collaborazioni nuove che aiuteranno a celebrare e commemorare questo luogo davvero speciale.

If you were getting past the velvet rope outside of Hollywood’s elite watering hole, the world famous Viper Room, on the Sunset Strip in the 1990’s, you found yourself at party central. Johnny Depp originally opened his intimate venue to have a cool place to hang out with his buddies and play or listen to the best music around. Chances were good that if you were a “Friend of the Viper Room”- that was what we called the club’s guests who got access to the tiny back office of the nightclub – you may have been even more famous than the bands playing on the stage. Around this time I was hired as the club’s Promoter and V.I.P. Liaison and I am now making a fun and unique musical documentary which will get anyone that watches it behind that velvet rope!
Impromptu and Laid Back
One never knew what to expect, but entertainment at it’s finest was always guaranteed. It was impromptu and laid back and simply the best club to see some first class live music up close and personal. Whether it was an amazing blues band or an up and coming rock act or a sizzling burlesque dance show, Depp’s down to earth vibe made all feel welcomed.
Unknown bands like Kara’s Flowers (Maroon 5), The Wallflowers, The Pussycat Dolls, Counting Crows, The Black Eyed Peas and many more were launched into stardom from that small stage in the best sounding room in town. SPOILER ALERT: we have some exclusive never before seen footage of these exact shows!
A really good night!
On a really good night, some of the “friends” would take the stage for surprise performances, like Mick Jagger, Flea from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Billy Idol, or Iggy Pop. You couldn’t buy a ticket in advance for these spectacular shows. You just had to be lucky to be in the right place and at the right time (which was usually real late at night at the Viper – just before closing – when the surprise guests took the stage).
Why was The Viper Room the hub for Hollywood’s who’s who?
So kickback was the environment that even some of the V.I.P. regulars, like Christina Applegate and Adam Duritz took jobs working behind the bar and The Walking Dead’s, Norman Reedus used to pass out flyers for the club.
The reputation of the Viper Room was overshadowed by a terrible tragedy, early on, with the passing of River Phoenix, just outside it’s doors. A dark cloud replaced the good times and the local clientele was replaced by tourists toting cameras, snapping away at the young star’s final resting place.
Archival Footage and Interviews
We have begun the process collecting archival footage shot at the club, accessing whatever house camera footage is available and shooting new interviews with the clubbers, film-stars, celebrities and rock ‘n’ roll legends who frequented the club.
Viper Room Reunion Concert!
A huge part of the movie will be the first ever Viper Room Reunion Concert that we will stage and film with the help of many of the great acts who played the club back in the day! Intercut within the documentary will be some guaranteed amazing new performances and collaborations that will help celebrate and memorialize this truly special place. After helping make this documentary a reality and watching the finished movie you will truly be able to say that you are now a “Friend Of The Viper Room”!

Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking: The Story of Richard D. Zanuck will premiere on Turner Classic Movies on Wednesday, May 8, 2013 at 8 p.m. EDT. We heard last year, after Mr. Zanuck’s death, that Johnny had contributed an interview for the documentary.
After the documentary, TCM will air Driving Miss Daisy, one of Zanuck’s Oscar-winning Best Pictures, followed by a re-airing of Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking.

When veteran producer Richard D. Zanuck passed away last year at the age of 77, Hollywood lost a long-serving mover and shaker. In a career spanning over half a decade, he headed 20th Century-Fox in the 1960s (greenlighting “The Sound of Music,” among others), shepherded Steven Spielberg’s first features to the screen (including “Jaws,” for which Zanuck received his first Oscar nod), won the Oscar for “Driving Miss Daisy,” produced the Academy Awards himself and collaborated with directors including Tim Burton, Ron Howard, Clint Eastwood, Sidney Lumet and William Friedkin. Meanwhile, as the son of legendary producer Darryl F. Zanuck — who produced over 200 features in his time, including such classics as “All About Eve” and “The Grapes of Wrath” — Zanuck was a rare working link to authentic Old Hollywood royalty. No surprise, then, that TCM should choose to celebrate his life and career in a new original documentary.
“Don’t Say No Until I Finish Talking: The Story of Richard D. Zanuck” will premiere next month at the TCM Classic Film Festival in Hollywood, before having its TV premiere on the channel on May 8. The director, Laurent Bouzereau, is well-versed in making-of documentaries, and has done many a behind-the-scenes feature on Steven Spielberg’s work; Spielberg himself, meanwhile, acts as an executive producer. Spielberg, of course, also features on the documentary’s all-star list of talking heads, which includes directors Howard, Eastwood, Burton and Friedkin, fellow producers like Sherry Lansing and Tom Rothman, and A-list stars ranging from Johnny Depp to Michelle Pfeiffer. That’s in addition, of course, to extensive interview footage with Zanuck himself. Remembrances of his father — who hired Zanuck for the Fox position at a young age, only to fire him after a series of late-60s musical flops — will be on the agenda. Says Bouzereau: “Dick Zanuck humanized what it is to be a producer. When he passed away, it was not a page of Hollywood history that was turned, it was an entire volume that was closed.” The film’s TV premiere on TCM, meanwhile, will be followed by airings of three of Zanuck’s most significant films. “Cocoon” and “Driving Miss Daisy” don’t exactly need the extra exposure, but it’s nice to see Zanuck’s first film as a producer, the 1959 thriller “Compulsion,” in the mix: a taut, thinly disguised adaptation of the infamous Leopold-Loeb murder case that arguably holds up better than Hitchcock’s earlier, comparable “Rope,” it’s worth seeing for a number of reasons — not least the performances of Dean Stockwell, Bradford Dillmann and Orson Welles, who jointly won Best Actor at Cannes. Cosier mainstream fare would dominate Zanuck’s producing output, so it’s nice to see TCM reflecting the range of his work and influence.

Questa storia apparve la prima volta nel numero del 15 febbraio della rivista The Hollywood Reporter.
La vedova di Ted Demme, Amanda, ha quasi finito la sua lunga gestazione sul documentario sul regista, che è morto di un attacco di cuore nel 2002. Il film, prodotto da James Franco e Denis Leary, non è un elogio di serie.

Ted Demme’s widow, Amanda, is nearly finished with her long-gestating documentary about the director, who died of a heart attack in 2002. The film, produced by James Franco and Denis Leary, isn’t some standard encomium.

“It’s done as a mockumentary since he was such a funny f—ing guy,” says Amanda, a music supervisor-turned-nightlife impresario-turned-photographer. She has taken an unorthodox approach: Demme’s pals, including Harvey Weinstein and Doug Herzog, reminisce in the presence of the “sexy f—ing urn” holding her husband’s ashes that she had designed by goth brand Chrome Hearts. Natalie Portman ice-skates with it. Balthazar Getty takes it into the boxing ring.
“At the end,” says Amanda, “Johnny Depp loses the urn. I’m going to call it In Search of Ted Demme.”

Johnny Depp, narratore d’eccezione nella versione originale, nella versione italiana ha la voce di Morgan.
Un ritratto a tinte forti della scena rock anni 60/70, non privo di chiaroscuri, che ci introduce senza censure nel vibrante mondo dei Doors.
