For No Good Reason: Charlie Paul brings Fear and Loathing in Bologna
"I learned to draw because I wanted to try to change the world." With these simple words the artist Ralph Steadman summed up the sense of a personal touch considered, even today, among the most innovative and revolutionary of the British landscape and beyond. Thus, through the documentary For No Good Reason, presented at the London Film Festival, the British director Charlie Paul reconstructs a journey through more than three decades on the screen to bring the spirit of anarchy and completely free that featured the most intense years lived by Steadman as an artist and as a man. Best known for the caricatures politically motivated appeared on magazine like Rolling Stone, The New York Times and the Daily Telegraph, the British cartoonist has shared much of his career with the American journalist Hunter S. Thompson. In particular, their collaboration led to the creation and success of the novel Fear and loathing in Las Vegas, where in 1998 the director Terry Gilliam made the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas starring Johnny Depp and Benicio Del Toro.

For No Good Reason reconstructs focusing on the creative process of an artist. How long did a project so meticulous?
Charlie Paul: The production of the documentary has been a long labor lasted fifteen years. During this time I designed the entire structure with Steadman, introducing every single day in his studio and placing a camera above the work table. In this way I wanted to capture the creative process at every stage, from the stain of color that seems to throw randomly on the sheet until the discovery of forms and meanings that hides. In short, it was an amazing experience.
To do symbolically as a guide to the world of Steadman is the actor Johnny Depp. As has been involved in the project?
Charlie Paul: In a natural way. Firstly, because it is a big fan of the work of Steadman, personally known thanks to Terry Gilliam. Also do not forget also the link with the film Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas, from the novel by that Steadman Thompson explained. We can not deny also that have the face of Johnny, so recognizable by the public, helps to direct the attention on the central theme of the documentary, which is the work of an artist and the creative spirit.

Charlie Paul: They were rivals, without a shadow of a doubt. In particular, Hunter looked at Ralph with a sort of suspicion. Deep down he was aware that much of the success of his novel you had to innovative designs and revolutionary companion. At the same time, however, despite their differences of character, the two were very close. Brothers who, in spite of the peaceful and non-competitive nature of Ralph, you are challenged throughout their lives. When Hunter decided to take his own life, for Ralph was a great shot. For example, we have a long section in which he speaks of this with great sadness. For my part, however, I have been very careful not to indulge too much in these atmospheres.
Constantly follow the creative inspiration of an artist is not easy. How did you organize the shoot?
Charlie Paul: Actually, it was not easy. We had some interesting moments and others that we had to throw it completely. In this sense, the film has moved more or less with the same trend held by the work of Steadman. Everything works more or less like this, every day he goes into his office and stands in front of a sheet. At that point throws a splash of color waiting for something to manifest, or not. The real adventure is that you never know where it will end this process. And this was one of the features that I loved most. My intention was just to show the public what was the unpredictable life of an artist.
In his documentary an important element is the music that accompanies the production of Steadman over the years. How did you work on this item?
Charlie Paul: The temptation was to use the original music of every decade recounted. Eventually, though, I decided to reinvent the whole putting, for example, in the section dedicated to techno Leonardo. In his ongoing research tries to mediate any Steadman expressive art form and I tried to do the same thing with the musical material. I hope that in this way the film expresses his creative madness.
In the documentary has always felt free to express his vision?
Charlie Paul: Absolutely. Steadman is not remotely interested in his personality, the importance that it could have a documentary about him. In reality it is a lot of fun throughout the creative process, drawing to us and telling part of his adventures. The most amazing this man is still the enthusiasm that has towards his art and the need to express it every single day, without interruption and with the heart. From this we understand that what he does is very much a part of himself.
What will the future For No Good Reason?
Charlie Paul: Actually we do not know yet. In the autumn, the film will be seen also in Los Angeles and at that point we'll be waiting. It is known that when the Americans take in hand a project can happen more and more.

Johnny Depp has opened his own private place to have a cool place where you can meet with friends and listen to the best music available. There was a good chance that anyone who was a "friend of the Viper Room" could be even more famous of the bands playing on stage.
At that time, Olivia was hired as a promoter of the club and of relations between the VIP and is now doing a documentary musical fun and unique.
"I've always loved the idea of the nights of the '20s, '30s and '40s," says Depp explaining that he wanted the Viper Room was a place where famous people would not feel as if it were on the screen.

You just needed to have the good fortune of being in the right place at the right time (which was usually late at night - just before the Viper shut - when surprise guests climbed on stage).
The Viper Room had some VIP customers as usual Christina Applegate and Adam Duritz who worked behind the bar.
The reputation of the Viper Room was overshadowed by a terrible tragedy when River Phoenix died a short distance from the port of entry. A dark cloud replaced the good times and the local clientele was replaced by tourists armed with cameras.
Much of the documentary will be dedicated to meeting the first concert of the Viper Room, which was kept on stage. Inside the movie will be guaranteed some incredible performances and new collaborations that will help to celebrate and commemorate this very special place.
