Dopo l’apparizione di Johnny Depp al Letterman Show, Bill Scheft, scrittore ed ironico autore del programma americano, scrive nel suo blog privato quanto la stima per la star hollywoodiana sia verticolosamente aumentata dopo aver assistito alla trasmissione.

”Credetemi, non ha certo bisogno che io lo dica….

…. Ma credo di avere una nuova grande favorito di sempre in fatto di celebrità.

Johnny Depp.

Non voglio entrare nel merito dei suoi film, anche se penso che sia un attore particolarmente dotato. E anche se ho sempre ammirato il modo in cui si ferma il traffico sulla 53 ° e a Broadway come con lui solo e nessuno altro che non si chiami Bieber…

Fino a ieri, la sua più grande qualità per me era quanto fosse capace di divertirsi a parlare con Dave. Ero affascinato da questo al di là di tutto. Sai come quando un tuo amico ha un figlio ed è la fine della vostra consueta conversazione adulta, per Dio sa quanto tempo? Stessa cosa succede se sei una super star. Non si può avere uno scambio di idee normale, per quanto tenti di renderlo possibile. E non lo hai. Ma poi guardi Johnny Depp con Dave. E Dave con lui. Non riesco a pensare a nessun altro. Ci sono un centinaio di uomini e donne che possono con successo accomodarsi in quella sedia alla sua destra, ma Johnny è l’unico che mi viene in mente quando penso a un ragazzo che cerca solo di stabilire un contanto in quel momento.

E fino a ieri sera, questo è quello che mi è sempre piaciuto di Johnny Depp. Ma poi ho visto tirare fuori il suo amico, il cantante / songwriter Bill Carter, condividere il suo spazio con lui e Dave, fino a retrocedere di posto nell’ atto di suonare uno slide di chitarra , appollaiato su uno sgabello in fondo in un lato. Poi, quando tutto è finito, l’ho visto sorridere e stringere ogni mano della band, dei tecnici, degli altri membri dello staff dello show, e di tutte quelle in strada fuori dalla porta del palco, sulla 53rd Street, dove centinaia di volti urlanti gli ricordava ciò che pensano che sia. Chi vogliono che lui sia.

Non so se avete mai riflettuto, ad alta voce o intimamente, a ciò che vi accadrebbe se foste una grande star. Di quanto sareste diversi. Di come trattereste le persone vicine e lontane. Io l’ho fatto. Molte volte, ogni volta con diversi gradi di sicurezza di ego. Ora che ho visto Johnny Depp in varie occasioni, inconfronto  rido di tali riflessioni sulla mia magnanimità. La mia impressionante umiltà.

Believe me, he doesn’t need me to say this….

….but I think I have a new favorite big-time celebrity.

Johnny Depp.

I won’t go running to his movies, even though I think he is a uniquely gifted actor. And even though I have always marveled at the way he stops traffic on 53rd and Broadway as no one not named Bieber can, that is just pure movie star appeal that a dozen people are born with.

Up to yesterday, his greatest quality to me was how much he enjoys talking to Dave. I am beyond charmed by that. You know how when a friend of yours has a child it is the end of regular adult conversation for God knows how long? Same thing with being a giant star. You cannot have a normal exchange, as much as you may want to. And you may not. But you watch Johnny Depp with Dave. And Dave with him. I cannot think of anyone else like that. There are a hundred effective men and women you can slot in that chair to his right, but he’s the only one who comes to mind when I think of just a guy who is just trying to connect in the moment.

And until last night, that’s what I loved about Johnny Depp. And then I saw him bring out his friend, singer/songwriter Bill Carter, to share home base with him and Dave, then recede in the next act to play some haunting slide guitar, perched on a stool in the well-defined background. Then, when that was done, I watched him smile and shake every hand in the band, the crew, other staffers on the show, and all the way out through the stage door, onto 53rd Street, where hundreds of screaming faces reminded him of who they think he is. Who they want him to be.

I don’t know if you’ve ever said, aloud or to yourself, about what you would be like if you were a huge star. Of how different you would be. How you would treat people near and far. I know I have. Many times, each time with varying degrees of self-assurance. Now that I have seen Johnny Depp on enough occasions, I know to laugh at such musings on my own magnanimity. My own awesome humility.
