È stato finalmente annunciato il nome dei registi che porteranno sul grande schermo questa nuova storia, si tratta di Joachim Rønning e Espen Sandberg, che hanno recentemente diretto Kon-Tiki, pellicola norvegese candidata agli ultimi Oscar e al momento inedita in Italia. I due hanno sbaragliato una concorrenza composta da nomi come Rupert Sanders (Biancaneve e il cacciatore) e Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman).
L’uscita di Pirati dei Caraibi 5 è prevista per il 10 luglio 2015. La sceneggiatura è stata affidata a Jeff Nathanson, che sul curriculum vanta gli script di titoli come Prova a prendermi, The Terminal, New York, I Love You e Tower Heist – Colpo ad alto livello. Le riprese dovrebbero cominciare nei primi mesi del 2014.
As Deadline Hollywood predicted last month, the Kon-Tiki directing team of Joachim Rønning and Espen Sandberg have landed the job directing Pirates Of The Caribbean 5. Disney, Johnny Depp and producer Jerry Bruckheimer have all signed off on the choice, and negotiations are underway on a deal that will make quickly. The duo will come aboard to prep the massive movie for a late year or early January start.

The studio is getting the script ship-shape, and they are bullish after getting a rewrite from Jeff Nathanson. This is an enormous coup for the Norwegian directing team who just fell out of the Legendary Pictures film Spectral. I’d written recently about Disney’s short list, and the fact these guys were atop it. Fredrik Bond, who helmed The Necessary Death Of Charlie Countryman, was also on the list as was Snow White And The Huntsman helmer Rupert Sanders.
This is a game-changing job for a director or directing team, and it’s a case of these guys getting hot at exactly the right time. All of the momentum for Rønning and Sandberg came from their remarkable Best Foreign Language Oscar-nominated film Kon-Tiki, a dramatization of Thor Heyerdal’s epic 4,300-mile crossing of the Pacific on a balsa wood raft in 1947, in an effort prove it was possible for South Americans to settle in Polynesia in pre-Columbian times. They made a lot of movie with a little money and showed they knew how to shoot on the water. As for Disney, the studio made an unexpected choice for the last film, Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, with Rob Marshall, and that grossed over $1 billion. The directors are repped by UTA, which also reps Depp and Jeff Nathanson, so this is a pretty big piece of business for that agency.

«I fuorilegge sono divertenti, fanno cose che non si possono fare e rompono gli schemi: tutto questo dà come un certo brivido indiretto», ha rivelato l’attore all’edizione inglese del magazine OK!.
Nel suo nuovo film «Lone Ranger», che uscirà nelle sale italiane il 3 luglio, Johnny Depp interpreta un indiano americano di nome Tonto che salva la vita a un uomo bianco. Il look del personaggio ha richiesto a Depp di sottoporsi a estenuanti sedute di make up.
«Sono rimasto al trucco e parrucco per almeno un paio d’ore al giorno, a meno che non decidessi di tenermi addosso tutto il make up anche a casa – cosa che ho fatto abbastanza spesso per risparmiare tempo al mattino!», ha ammesso ironicamente.

E’ come sempre Deadline a riportare i nomi dei registi in lizza per dirigere I Pirati dei Caraibi 5. Con le riprese previste entro la fine dell’anno (massimo inizio 2014),Jerry Bruckheimer e Johnny Depp hanno stilato una lista di potenziali registi, dalla quale sono emersi i più papabili: Fredrik Bond (The Necessary Death of Charlie Countryman), il duo Joachim Ronning & Espen Sandberg (Kon-Tiki) e Rupert Sanders (Biancaneve e il Cacciatore). He’s not so keen on Barbossa’s monkey, though. “It’s actually a girl capuchin monkey, and quite skittish, so she has to wear a diaper all the time, unlike my other leading ladies”.

Il lavoro sul copione, affidato a Jeff Nathanson è iniziato oltre un anno fa, ma ancora non si sa chi sarà il regista e chi comporrà il resto del cast. Il produttore Jerry Bruckheimer si è limitato a commentare in un’intervista:
«Pensiamo di avere una storia fantastica. A Johnny è piaciuta molto».
Sembra molto improbabile che, dopo i risultati non certo soddisfacenti ottenuti dal precedente film, la Disney si rivolga ancora a Rob Marshall.

In esclusiva un’intervista al produttore di The Lone Ranger, Jerry Brukheimer.
MM: Johnny Depp ha creato un personaggio unico e iconoclasta, Jack Sparrow. Che tipo di processo usa Johnny per la creazione di un personaggio come Tonto, in questo caso?
JB: Beh, voglio dire, il suo processo. E ‘un genio nella creazione di questi personaggi. Ha trovato un personaggio che voleva interpretare, Tonto, lo ha concettualizzato , ha creato il trucco e ha lavorato con i suoi truccatori e mi ha mandato alcune foto di come pensava Tonto dovesse essere. Anche in questo caso, ha creato un altro personaggio iconico, be ‘ avete visto il trailer, ma non vedo l’ora di far vedere il film e il rapporto tra il Ranger e Tonto. MM: A livello logistico , è più difficile da girare su, una nave pirata o di una locomotiva a vapore?
JB: Penso che entrambi hanno i loro problemi. [Ride] Il mare è sicuramente più spietato, perché non si sa mai che cosa vuole ottenere, perché hai a che fare con l’acqua. Almeno [con un treno] sei su un treno, sai cosa fa la rotaia. Ma è il tempo il nemico in entrambi i casi, Caraibi o deserto del New Mexico.
MM: Il quinto film di “Pirati” è ora in lavorazione, ed uscirà il 10 luglio 2015. Come ti senti in merito e come Come ti senti in merito a come pensi saranno i prossimi “Pirati”?
JB: Penso che abbiamo una storia formidabile. Stiamo lavorando con lo sceneggiatore Jeff Nathanson in questo momento . Quindi, siamo molto entusiasti di dove siamo. Abbiamo lanciato la storia a Johnny, gli è piaciuta tant0
MM: Johnny Depp created such a unique and such an iconoclastic character with Jack Sparrow. What sort of process do you go through with Johnny for creating a character like Tonto, in this case?
JB: Well, I mean, it’s his process. He’s a genius in creating these characters. He found a character that he wanted to play in Tonto, conceptualized the character, created the makeup and worked with his makeup artists and sent me some photographs of how he thought Tonto should look. Again, he created another iconic character, and I can’t for you and the audience — well, you’ve seen him on the trailer, but I can’t wait for you to see the relationship between the Lone Ranger and Tonto. This is the origin story of the Lone Ranger. So, we’re telling how the Lone Ranger became the Lone Ranger.
MM: Westerns, lately, have had kind of an up-and-down — and mostly down — success rate at the box office. How do you find the balance between the sort of classic Western archetypes and also modernizing it for today’s audience?
JB: We heard the same thing about pirate movies. They hadn’t been successful for 30 years or so, if not longer. With Gore and our writing teams and Johnny and Armie, I think we created something very special. It’s still a Western but, you know, ‘Django [Unchained]’ is a Western, too, and it’s doing quite well.
I think it’s the characters that you fall in love with and the story, and I think we’ve got both that are very interesting. Hopefully, we’ll have the kind of surprise for the audience who they got when they saw “Pirates.”
MM: You’ve got Armie Hammer as the man behind the mask. What was it about him that stood out for you that made him the right guy to put on the hat?
JB: I saw him in ‘Social Network.’ I thought he looks like a heroic actor, and he is a heroic person in his personal life. He’s a great guy. He’s got the great look and he’s a wonderful actor. You know, you try to find really good actors that will embody the role that you imagine them to play.
MM: On a sheer logistic level, what’s more difficult to shoot on, a pirate ship or a steam locomotive?
JB: I think they both have their challenges. [Laughs] The sea is certainly more unforgiving because you never know what you’re going to get, because you’re dealing with water. At least [with a train] you’re on a rail, so you know what you’re doing on rail. But the weather is what can kind of throw you up for a loop in both situations, whether you’re in the Caribbean or you’re in the New Mexico desert.
MM: The fifth “Pirates” movie is now scheduled to open on July 10, 2015. How are you feeling about where you’re at with the next “Pirates”?
JB: I think we have a terrific story. We’re working with the screenwriter right now named Jeff Nathanson [“Catch Me If You Can”]. So, we’re very excited about where we’re at. We’ve pitched the story to Johnny who liked it a lot. So far, so good.
